Blind Text Generator

Welcome to the Dummy Text Generator!

This handy tool helps you create dummy text for all your layout needs.

Dummy text: Its function as a filler or as a tool for comparing the visual impression of different typefaces

Dummy text is text that is used in the publishing industry or by web designers to occupy the space which will later be filled with 'real' content. This is required when, for example, the final text is not yet available. Dummy text is also known as 'fill text'. It is said that song composers of the past used dummy texts as lyrics when writing melodies in order to have a 'ready-made' text to sing with the melody. Dummy texts have been in use by typesetters since the 16th century.

NYT: Shopping with Abbott Miller

Just for fun. This was the first post in today's UrbanEye:

By MELENA RYZIK

Thursday, October 8, 2009

Attention font nerds: you probably already knew this, but typography and other graphic design make for cool house stuff. Attention everyone else: follow the lead of Abbott Miller, a partner at the design firm Pentagram. He liked the Alexander Girard bedding at Urban Outfitters, the Fable Game animal puzzle at Kid O, and the selections at Spring Design & Art, including an arrow hanger, a poster of found-object letters, and a Google news pillow. The year’s most searched-for terms, memorialized on your couch: now you’re definitely a nerd.

FontCase

Another font manager program:

An elegant, award-winning font manager for the Mac. Available exclusively from FontShop.

Mac OS X comes with basic font management, but anyone with more than a few fonts needs a professional app to preview, organize, and activate fonts in their growing collection. We recommend FontCase. Pieter Omvlee and Laurent Baumann won an Apple Design Award this year for his app's elegant UI backed by a powerful tagging system to help you manage fonts in an intuitive way. If you've used iPhoto or iTunes you'll be instantly familiar with the FontCase interface. See below for visual examples of FontCase at work, or download the full-featured demo and try it for yourself. Available for Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard and above.

1) Go to the nytimes website and do a search for your topic.

2) Select 10 articles (preferably within a short time span) & read.

3) Respond (either with a comment, an image, whatever). The idea being that this might give you a narrower, more specific focus for your topic.

next:

Type specimen book (16-page signature):

1) Pick 12 typefaces:
3 serif display
3 sans serif display
3 serif text
3 sans serif text

2) Design a 16-page type specimen book. Use text from something relating to your topic. Print to size, bound and bring to class. Take a look at the David Berlow specimen pdf.

KNOPF: THEN AND NOW
WEDNESDAY 21 OCTOBER 2009

KNOPF: THEN AND NOW

In the late 1980s, the Alfred A. Knopf design group redefined the art of American book packaging. Two decades later, the department continues to set the bar for the trade publishing industry. Knopf: Then and Now brings the legendary team of Carol Devine Carson, Barbara de Wilde, Archie Ferguson, and Chip Kidd together on stage for the first time. The quartet will give a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of their most daring cover designs, discuss the process of collaboration, and describe the challenges affecting book jacket design today.
