Hiring A Designer

It’s easy to spot a beautiful portfolio. Designers know that looks sell, and many people sell themselves that way.

Of course, the ability to make something that looks good matters, especially for visual designers.

But the challenge is that great images say nothing about what it will be like to work with someone, or whether they’ll be consistently able to produce good work.

Did they build it themselves? Yeah, building it yourself gets you more credibility, but only if it’s well-designed. An interaction designer might suffer here by putting their lackluster visual chops to work, though there’s more room for building thoughtful interactions. Portfolio sites — CargoCollective, Behance, any number of WordPress templates — tend to only emphasize images, and even a visual designer should have a good story to tell."

Creating a storyboard in InDesign

There are two ways that I know of to do this

Open InDesign and File->New->Document

That should bring up this box

Now, either you can make the width at least 408p (picas) or more, OR

you can create the document as-is (single 8.5 x 11 page), add 12 Columns

so that now it looks like this

Open up the pages tab, click on the little lines icon on the upper right hand corner to bring up a menu. on the menu, uncheck "Allow Document Pages to Shuffle"

Now, reopen that menu and say "insert pages..." and put 5 after page 1.

it should look like this :

Now you're ready to drag and drop images on the pages to create your storyboard!

—Pay attention first and foremost to the grid + the type.

—White space! Emphasis is not just making things big. I favor emphasis
that is achieved by small, strong blocks surrounded by generous white
space that dignifies them.

—Learn the technology that powers the medium and the opportunities it
makes available. The rise of CSS3 has made a number of things much
easier to accomplish than in the past. Rounded borders, gradients and
drop shadows can be used together in subtle ways to add depth and
interest to functional components of a site. They of course can be
abused, but they also let us build UIs that came alive in the browser.
Likewise with animations and transitions.

ASSIGNMENT 11: PERSONAL IDENTITY

Our last assignment is Personal Identity/Self Branding. It is your face, figuratively speaking, as you present yourself to the world as a designer.

Objectives:
1) Create a business card (2"x3.5" is a standard but you can definitely go wild with it!)
2) Create a web presence (can be a website that you’ve designed that contains all your work or just clean up your blogs).
3) Create a leave behind (an item that one would usually leave with the interviewer after an interview has been conducted. An item can vary in form but has to represent your personal design style and field of trade).
4) Create a PDF (has to have your work from this class presented in a well put together manner).

Process:
1) Do research on existing personal branding.
2) Create a brand for yourself that consists of objects listed in the objectives. Your brand has to represent the designer that you are... playful, serious, etc.
You are expected to have a finished personal identity and be ready to present by next class. You may bring in previous drafts if you find it necessary or relevant for discussion. Please post the progress on your personal blog and comment on each other’s work.
